Löneratorn

A skeuomorphic salary calculator for Unionen — built in 2013, when we could still legitimately bust out the scratched-metal textures and FPS paintbrushes.

Pixelpitch hired me to help develop the concept and visual design for Löneratorn — a campaign for the Swedish trade union Unionen aimed at white-collar members. Goal: give people a feel for what they should earn based on profession and experience, and some concrete advice for negotiating salary with their employer. It ran in 2013, the last moment in history where you could ship an interface covered in rivets, brushed metal, and glowing needles without anyone looking at you sideways.

The machine

A real-looking instrument

A second mode lets members practise articulating their value — a sequence of statements rated on a green horizontal slider (“Stämmer inte alls” to “Stämmer helt”). Every control is a physical thing: grooved slider grips, drilled screw-heads, knurled dropdowns. The whole machine sits on a riveted metal plate over a worn green background — military-grade, but friendly.

Öva löneförhandling — the slider step.
The entry form — yrke, år i yrket, nuvarande lön.
Räkna ut lön — the needle lands between your floor and ceiling, with a hard digital readout below.
Early sketch

Before the screws went on

An early pencil sketch I dug out of an old notebook. The idea was always a machine with rows of feedback windows, a central slider reading “stämmer inte alls → stämmer helt”, prev/next keys flanking the question panel, and a final “visa min lön” reveal at the end. We eventually flattened the look — not in the flat-design sense, but the layout got simpler — though most of the anatomy on this page made it into the shipped version.
